Cyprus 60-Day Residency for Online Business Owners: How It Actually Works
Cyprus offers one of the world's most flexible tax residency rules — 60 days a year is enough, if you meet the other conditions. Here's whether it fits your online business.

Sixty Days Is the Entire Presence Bar
Genuinely the lowest in the EU for tax residency. It's also the number most people misunderstand, because four other conditions have to be true at the same time, and skipping any one of them collapses the claim the first time a tax authority checks arrival stamps.
Combined with Cyprus's non-domicile regime — seventeen years of exemption from tax on foreign dividends, interest, and most rental income — Cyprus can be a genuinely strong base for an online business owner who meets all of it properly.
The 60-Day Rule Requirements
You qualify for Cyprus tax residency under the 60-day rule if all of the following apply:
You spend at least 60 days in Cyprus in the tax year
You do not spend 183+ days in any other single country in that tax year
You maintain a permanent home in Cyprus, owned or rented
You have a business, employment, or directorship connection in Cyprus
Note what isn't on that list as of the 2026 reform: there is no longer a standalone requirement that you not be tax resident anywhere else. The remaining four conditions still have to be met in full, and they're the ones that actually matter — showing up for 60 days without a genuine Cyprus home and a genuine Cyprus economic connection doesn't qualify you for anything.
The Non-Dom Advantage
Non-domiciled Cyprus tax residents — typically foreign nationals who weren't previously Cyprus-domiciled — get a Special Defence Contribution exemption for 17 years, covering foreign dividend income, foreign interest income, and foreign rental income. In practice, that means your foreign investment income is tax-free in Cyprus for nearly two decades. Cyprus-source income, and Cyprus-source employment or business income, stays taxable at ordinary progressive rates regardless of non-dom status.
The Setup for Online Business Owners
Option 1: Cyprus Ltd company plus personal Cyprus residency. The Cyprus company operates the business and pays Cyprus corporate tax at 15% — the standard rate as of 1 January 2026, up from the 12.5% many older guides still quote. You draw salary and/or dividends from it. Salary attracts Cyprus personal tax on the normal progressive scale up to 35%. Dividends attract 0% under non-dom status if they're foreign-source, or Special Defence Contribution at 17% otherwise. Personal foreign investment income stays exempt under non-dom.
Option 2: Foreign company plus Cyprus personal residency. The business is incorporated elsewhere — Delaware, UK, Panama, wherever — and you draw dividends from it. Non-dom status exempts foreign dividends from Cyprus SDC. The Cyprus personal tax analysis then depends heavily on how those payments are characterised, and on whether the foreign company itself risks being treated as Cyprus tax resident if it's effectively run from Cyprus.
For most online business owners, Option 1 is cleaner if the Cyprus company can genuinely house the business. Option 2 tends to show up where an existing structure is already established elsewhere and moving it isn't worth the cost.
Take Sofia, running a Cyprus Ltd agency billing USD 180,000/year to EU and UK clients under Option 1. Corporate tax at 15% takes USD 27,000 off the top. She draws a modest USD 40,000 salary, taxed on the normal progressive scale, and takes the rest as dividends, which land at 0% Special Defence Contribution under her non-dom status. Her effective combined rate sits well below what she'd pay staying put in most EU capitals, without the paper-thin 60-day claim that gets challenged.
The Cost of Cyprus Life
Cyprus sits above Georgia and below Malta or most of Western Europe. Limassol, the main HNW area, runs USD 3,000–5,000/month for a comfortable single-founder life; Paphos and Nicosia are cheaper. Flight connections are good to most of Europe, moderate to the Middle East, and longer-haul to the Americas or Asia.
The Real Physical Presence Question
The 60-day minimum is genuine, but tax authorities scrutinise whether the 60 days actually happened and whether the whole residency claim is real. Airport arrival and departure records, hotel receipts, apartment lease evidence, and utility usage all get checked. Plenty of online business owners spend more like 90–120 days in Cyprus despite the 60-day technical minimum, specifically to build a residency claim that can't be picked apart.

The Common Trap
Believing the 60-day rule alone, without a genuine Cyprus economic connection, is enough to establish Cyprus tax residency. It isn't. Home countries scrutinise "60-day residency" claims aggressively, particularly for high earners — and if your claim doesn't hold, your original country likely still considers you resident there under its own rules, which means its CFC provisions can tax a foreign company's income as if it were yours, wherever that company happens to be incorporated. You need real Cyprus property, a real Cyprus business connection, and defensible substance, not a stamp count.
Cyprus done properly works excellently. Cyprus done as a paper claim usually fails.
One more thing the paper claim doesn't fix: a Cyprus company selling digital services to consumers elsewhere in the EU, or to the UK, generally still has its own VAT registration obligations in those markets under EU and UK digital-services rules. That sits alongside your 15% corporate rate, not instead of it.
Getting the Substance Right
If Cyprus's 60-day residency fits your business, book a scoping call. Bring your current residency status, your target Cyprus property arrangement, and your business's client geography — we'll work through the specific setup and what your substance evidence actually needs to look like before you rely on it.
