Stripe, PayPal, and Wise for Non-US Online Business Owners
How to actually collect payments when you're not American, don't live in America, and don't have a US company — plus the workarounds that are legitimate and the ones that aren't.

If you run an online business from Vietnam, Argentina, or Nigeria, Stripe simply isn't available to you. PayPal will freeze your funds for 180 days the moment your volume looks unusual, and a wire transfer is the kind of thing your Western customers quietly abandon their cart over.
Key Numbers to Know (2026)
Stripe availability directly: ~46 countries (Stripe + local entities)
Stripe indirect via US LLC: most nationalities can use it once they own a US LLC
Stripe fees typical: 2.9% + 30¢ for US cards; higher for international cards or AmEx
PayPal fees for cross-border: 4.4% + fixed, more with currency conversion
Wise Business: 40+ currencies, FX margins of 0.4–1%
Payoneer: wide developing-market availability, higher fees than Wise
US LLC formation cost: $200–$800 (state filing + registered agent)
US LLC annual costs: typically $300–$1,500 (state fees, registered agent, tax filing)
Why Your Country Doesn't Get Stripe
Stripe operates directly in roughly 46 countries. If yours isn't one of them, you're not being singled out — you're outside the list Stripe built its compliance and banking rails around. PayPal fills some of the gap but treats certain nationalities, particularly in developing markets, as higher-risk by default: frequent freezes, 180-day holds, and support that won't tell you why.
The Route That Actually Works
Form a US LLC (Delaware, Wyoming, or New Mexico) or a UK Ltd, pair it with a real bank account or EMI, and apply for Stripe as that entity. This isn't a loophole — the LLC is legitimately conducting the business, and you're its real owner.
US LLC (DE/WY/NM)
Best fit: Most nationalities; needed for direct Stripe access
Banking pairing: Mercury, Relay, or Wise Business
Setup cost: $200–$800
Annual cost: $300–$1,500UK Ltd
Best fit: Businesses expecting UK-facing clients or invoicing
Banking pairing: UK business account or EMI
Setup cost: See Article A3
Annual cost: See Article A3
Tax-wise, as a non-US owner of a single-member LLC, your US tax exposure is generally limited to income "effectively connected" with a US trade or business (ECI). For most online businesses with no US employees or dependent agents, that can be nil. Nil US tax is not the same as nil tax overall — your home country still taxes you as a resident on this income, and its rules on where a business is actually managed decide the rest. That needs professional analysis for your specific facts.
What Gets Accounts Closed
Using someone else's Stripe account. Fake US residency claims. A nominee director who signs paperwork but doesn't run the business. Stripe closes accounts and freezes funds the moment it finds these arrangements — and the freeze is not symbolic. One seller Stripe flagged for exactly this had $40K held for 120 days while it investigated, with no card processing and no explanation beyond a form email.
Where PayPal Breaks Down
PayPal works in most countries, but nationalities in developing markets face frequent freezes and 180-day holds with little recourse. Treat it as a supplementary rail, never your only one.
Wise Business and Payoneer, for the Gaps
Wise Business is strong for receiving USD, EUR, or GBP from clients or platforms — you get local receiving details, not a card-processing tool. It's essential for B2B service businesses and marketplaces. Payoneer covers markets Wise doesn't reach yet, at a higher fee.
Choosing Your Route
If most nationalities and business types can access Stripe indirectly: form the US LLC first and pair it with Mercury or Wise Business. If your clients specifically expect UK invoicing, a UK Ltd may fit better — check Article A3 for the full cost breakdown before committing. Either way, don't rely on PayPal or wire transfers as your primary rail; they're a fallback, not infrastructure.
