Why Spain Matters

Spain is one of the most popular lifestyle destinations for expats from the UK, Germany, France, the Nordics, and Latin America. Good weather, healthcare, cost of living below Northern Europe, and cultural depth.

For qualifying Beckham-rule nomads/expats: 24% flat rate on Spanish-source income is competitive.

For lifestyle-first EU residents: Spain remains one of Europe's most attractive lifestyle destinations. Beaches, culture, language accessibility.

For wealthy families: wealth tax varies enormously by autonomous region. Madrid effectively 0% wealth tax; Andalucia and others also favourable; some regions punitive. Regional choice matters massively.

For wealthy families (Plan-B lens): Spain is not a bank-secrecy or Plan-B privacy jurisdiction. Full CRS transparency, wealth tax exposure in many regions, Modelo 720. Spain is a place to LIVE with Mediterranean quality; not to hide wealth.

Chinese HNW families: some Chinese HNW have chosen Spain for lifestyle and EU access. Beckham Law can help for the 6-year window. Post-Beckham, standard high Spanish rates apply.

The Regional Variation

Spain’s autonomous regions have significant tax autonomy. Wealth tax in Madrid is effectively zero. In Catalonia, it applies fully. Inheritance tax varies from near-zero (Madrid, Andalucía) to 34%+ (some regions).

For HNW retirees, the choice of region within Spain can shift the total tax bill more than the choice between Spain and neighbouring countries.

The Solidarity Wealth Tax

Introduced 2023 (Impuesto de Solidaridad de las Grandes Fortunas), applies at national level and overrides regional reductions. Rate 1.7% to 3.5% on net wealth above €3M.

Net effect: even in Madrid (traditionally wealth-tax-free), HNW residents now face national solidarity wealth tax above the threshold.

The Beckham Rule

Special regime for qualifying inbound workers relocating to Spain for employment. 24% flat rate on Spanish employment income up to €600,000 for 6 years.

Not applicable to retirees (requires qualifying employment relationship). Relevant to HNW professionals relocating for work.

Visa Options

  • Non-Lucrative Visa (residencia no lucrativa): for retirees with passive income of ~€2,400/month. 1 year initial, renewable, 5 years to permanent.

  • Digital Nomad Visa (Nómada Digital, since 2023): for remote workers with foreign clients, ~€2,700/month.

  • Golden Visa: ABOLISHED April 2025. Real estate route no longer available.

Property

  • Foreigners can buy Spanish property directly with no restrictions.

  • Foreign resident CGT: 19% on gains from Spanish property.

  • Property transfer tax (ITP) or VAT applies on purchase, plus notary and registration fees.

Healthcare

Spanish public healthcare is excellent and accessible to residents. Private options widely available and moderately priced.

CRS/FATCA Reality

Spain is fully CRS-participating. Spanish financial institutions report:

•    Non-Spanish tax residents' Spanish accounts to home country

•    US persons' Spanish accounts to IRS

•    Standard CRS data

Spain is fully transparent. Not a privacy jurisdiction.

Note on ‘Modelo 720’: Spain has its own separate foreign asset reporting for Spanish tax residents. Spanish residents with foreign assets over €50K must file annual Modelo 720. Historical severe penalties for non-filing were struck down by EU court but reporting obligation remains.

Banking Reality

•    BBVA, Santander, CaixaBank, Sabadell - major banks

•    Non-resident accounts available for some purposes (property purchase, investment)

•    Personal account minimums: modest

•    Multi-currency accounts standard

•    Correspondent banking and SWIFT: full access (Spain is major EU banking centre)

•    Blacklist status: Spain is NOT on any blacklist

Comparative Cost of Doing Business

•    Spanish SL (Sociedad Limitada) setup: €1,000-3,000

•    Annual compliance: €2,000-8,000+

•    Comparable to other Western Europe

Honest Comparison

Spain works well for European retirees prioritising lifestyle and EU access, with modest wealth. HNW retirees face material wealth tax and inheritance tax exposure depending on region choice.

Portugal (pre-NHR) used to be the tax-favourable alternative. Post-NHR, Portugal and Spain are more comparable — both driven more by lifestyle than tax.

Spanish-speaking Latin American alternatives (Colombia, Panama, Uruguay) generally produce better tax outcomes for entrepreneurs, high-earning nomads, or retirees with significant investment income.
